I`m a Chinese volunteer teacher in Westside elementary  School,West fargo,ND. i was study in Shaanxi Normal University and majored in master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. I love the career of Chinese International Education,i ever been to Thailand to teach Chinese twice before, but this time is my first time to come to US,US has the most Confucius Institute and Confucius Classroom  all around the world. i hope students get to know Chinese and Chinese culture under my effort. I`ll try my best to give kids most interesting Chinese class.

Kids never had Chinese class in Westside elementary before,at first time, many kids thought i`m a Spanish teacher, because  China and Chinese are far unfamiliar to them,so it  takes time to let kids accept an alien Culture.  It has 23classes  whole school from 1st grade to fifth grade, each class  have 1 Chinese lesson per week, and each lesson lasts 30 minutes,i have great passion and enthusiasm to teach those adorable kids.and i felt happy when i spend time with them.

The first Chinese lesson is about”how do you greet people in Chinese”,at the beginning of the class, i had a self introduction ,which  include where do i from and the historical sites in my hometown,i taught kids to say “teacher”and “hello teacher”in Chinese, we also had a work shop together, all kids sit on a circle, greeting to their neighbors and shake hands at the same time, just like how  Chinese people greeting each other. and we also played a small game at the end of the class:I hide the  card”你好(hello)”back on a kids,  let a volunteer to find the card, everyone know where the card is except the volunteer,we use the “cold and hot”rule to give him/her a clue,at last, he/she can find the card by himself/herself.  So the target of the first class are:1:students can say “hello”,and “hello, teacher”in Chinese; 2:students learn about the different order from Chinese name and English name(on the contrary,in Chinese name ,last name always come first and first name comes last);3:learned about some Chinese Culture(such as Yellow River.Terra-cotta Warriors, and Shaolin Temple)

From now on, students had learned 4Chinese lessons, respectively are:”Greeting”; “Chinese students routine “;”Mid-autumn Festival”;”Chinese Pinyin(Chinese alphabet)”and”Family”,here we take “Mid-autumn Festival”an example,we divide the complete class to 4 steps, the first step is to tell the legend story about Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, second step is let student retell the story by themselves  according to 6 pictures(each picture can conclude a sentence and the 6 pictures consists a complete story),and the third step is to divide students into 6 groups, each group got one picture, what they need to do is color the blank picture. the last step is to hang students production on the hallway after be decorated. So from this class, students leant about the legend story of Chinese Mid-Autumn festival and understand why people eat mooncake in Mid-Autumn Festival.besides, they can also use Chinese to say “Happy Mid-autumn festival”

In the future, we will organization more interesting project of Chinese culture and Chinese language.and hope all of the kids can enjoy our Chinese class.
